Public opinion started the needless shark cull back in 1937, and public opinion must end it!

About 85 years ago, Randwick Council in Sydney opposed a motion for shark nets and stated that they "believe that the only safe way is to erect shark-proof enclosures" (Daily Telegraph, 29 March 1935). However, the public supported the motion, so the lethal shark meshing program began as we have it today.

If public support started this cull, public opposition should end it.

On 10 August 2022, The Hon. Emma Hurst tabled our Petition as a document in NSW Parliament opposing 85 years of shark culling and requesting the removal of nets and drumlines.

A big heartfelt thank you to Ms Hurst and all of the politicians working hard to stop the meshing season from going ahead on 1 September, or ever again!

The Petition has 120,400+ signatures, with more people signing and sharing it every day. It's only a matter of time before public opinion wins and the shark nets disappear forever. But we can't get complacent. For now we must continue the fight.

It's a critical moment in the campaign, and all actions count toward sending the clear message that it's time to modernise NSW's Shark Meshing Program.

I'm sure you've already signed the Petition, and we thank you. Would you consider multiplying that effort? You can do that by sharing the Petition to your social media accounts, by email, word of mouth or any way that works for you.
